Other people’s position can become the main measure of your own value until the original reason you wanted something gets lost.
In relationships
Another person’s success can invite both comparison and goodwill. Recognizing their achievement need not erase an unmet wish of one’s own.
Under pressure
A visible gap may draw attention toward reducing someone else’s advantage instead of choosing a useful next step.
